About the book...

Zara Ruiz is a normal California girl on the verge of graduating high school and thinking about her dawning future. But when dusk brings a shattering loss—and she discovers a priceless object in the shallows of a tide pool—she is thrust a hundred-and-eighty years into the past. There she meets handsome ranchero Javier de la Ventura—who has big dreams and bigger secrets—along with his enchanting family, in a land that is at once familiar, and yet utterly foreign.

Between cattle rustlers, pirates and a growing call for statehood, it is not a peaceful time to be a Mexican settler in young Alta California. But it is in that time and place that Zara must decide if she can find what she longs for most in the past, or if her heart's THREE WISHES can only be resolved in the present.

The River of Time Series is one of my all time favorites! You can check out my post on the rest of the series HERE. A while back I read Lisa's River of Time series and LOVED it! That series is one of my absolute favorites of all time! I was so excited to find out that she's releasing a brand new book! This book is the start of a new series but it's connected to her original series.

All About That Cover: Stars of Fortune by Nora Roberts

"All About That Cover" is a weekly event hosted here that focuses on the differences between various book covers of the same book, such as cover changes, covers from different countries as well as special editions.

U.S vs UK cover

U.S. Edition
UK Edition
Which cover to you like? I like the colors in the UK edition but the U.S. edition is much more striking and magical looking. The U.S. edition makes me believe there is something magical going on, the UK edition reminds me of a pretty day in Greece. I love the sand with the town in the background, not to mention to sky. Look at that moon!

Review: Secrets in Phoenix by Gabriella Lepore

Secrets in Phoenix
Author: Gabriella Lepore
Source: Purchased in the Amazon Kindle store
Publisher: OfTomes Publishing
Format: kindle ebook
Pages: 240
Genre:  YA Fantasy
Rating: 5 Stars
Release: October 13th 2015
When Sophie Ballester and her twin brothers Sam and Todd are uprooted from their home and sent to a remote boarding school run by their Great Aunt Ness, they stumble upon a hidden room that holds a secret—a secret that will change everything.

The people of Phoenix Holt are not what they seem.

In fact, nothing is.

My review of Secrets in Phoenix...
Secrets In Phoenix, perfect for those seeking a story full of mystery, magic and romance! I have fallen absolutely in love with this story! With the feel of Harry Potter and the epic romance of Twilight, I never wanted this story to end!

I was excited to learn that this book takes place in the UK, in a sleepy, mysterious little town called Phoenix Holt. Within the town of Phoenix Holt lies Averett Academy. Let's just say that there are some interesting things (and characters) going on within the walls of the academy. There are a few more surprises going on with Sophie's new school, but you'll have to discover them when you read the book!

Not only did I love the setting, I also loved the immensely descriptive details!

"The leaves on the trees were bronzed with the first traces of autumn, and some lay scattered over the ground like crisp red moats circling the broad tree trunks."

Speaking of characters, the protagonist, Sophie meets Jaxon, a fellow student who is assigned with the task of being her mentor. I just loved him! Not to mention their funny but flirty back-and-forth banter.

"My stomach gave a flutter. ''What's wrong with what?" I answered in an inferior squeak.
"The door,'' said Jaxon, smiling carefully.
"Nothings wrong with the door," I replied. I glanced at it. "I was just about through it."
"You have to open it first,'' Jaxon said in a wry murmur. "Like this." He reached past me and clasped the brass handle."
I snuck a peek at him as he leaned around me. He wore an untucked shirt and a loosely knotted tie. His eyes smouldered grey and his sandy-coloured hair looked windswept. And he smelled incredible.
"See?'' he teased. "You open it, and then you can go through it. That's how doors work.''

One of my favorite parts of this novel was Great Aunt Ness, and Sophie's twin brothers Sam and Todd! Right away I just adored Sophie's Great Aunt Ness! At first Sophie questions her because she wasn't involved in their lives while her and her brothers were growing up. Sophie, Sam and Todd quickly learn that their aunt is hiding something, and that something may be why they were kept away from Phoenix Holt and their Aunt Ness up until now.

Sam and Todd may be identical twins but they are nothing alike! Sam is definitely the wild one so to speak, as well as an extrovert. Todd is most certainly an introvert and much more reserved. That being said, they always have each other's backs which I just loved!

All in all Secrets In Phoenix is a magical, gripping and fast read! If you're in a reading slump this book is a sure remedy! This is my first Gabrielle Lepore book and she's now one of my favorite authors!

Book Spotlight: Furious by T.R. Ragan + Giveaway

Title: Furious
Author: Faith McMann
Release Date: March 22nd 2016
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Formats: Paperback, Audiobook (CD) & ebook

“Searing...Readers with strong stomachs will eagerly await the next installment.” Publishers Weekly

“Faith McMann, heroine of this gripping novel, is a Sacramento schoolteacher, wife, and mother who comes home just in time to witness her husband’s throat getting cut and her two children hauled away. The attempt on her life is botched—the killers were in a hurry—and as she recovers, she’s convinced the police are brushing her off. So she whacks a detective with his computer keyboard and gets sentenced to anger management sessions. If this were a cookie-cutter thriller, the male hero would be tracking the killers with an automatic weapon and maybe a major babe beside him. But our hero is smarter than that, and her revenge is a product of relationships, not bullets. In classes, she meets other victims as angry as she is, and, together, in fine scenes of action and suspense, they seek explanations and vengeance as well as the children’s rescue, which takes them into a slimy world of human trafficking. Learn here about “lot lizards” and “kiddie strolls” on the way to a wild finale. Suspenseful and smart, in equal measure.” Don Crinklaw, Booklist

About the book...
Faith McMann comes home to a nightmare: her husband is killed and her son and daughter are taken. Although the intruders leave her for dead, she survives. Crippling grief and fear for her children make life unbearable. Until her anguish turns to anger…and she trades victimhood for vengeance.

Frustrated with the law’s efforts, she takes action to rescue her children—and wreaks havoc on the brutal criminals who tore them from her. With her family and newfound allies at her side, Faith descends into the hellish underworld of human trafficking, determined to make those who prey on the innocent pray for mercy.

The forces she's up against have already proven that their ruthlessness knows no bounds. And there's nothing they won't do to turn Faith's crusade into a suicide mission. But they're about to learn that nothing is more dangerous than a mother fighting for her children—especially one who's earned the nickname Furious.

Waiting On Wednesday - Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine , that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. Check them out for links to more blogs! :)

This week's pre-publication "can't wait to read" selection is...

Publication Date: March 29th 2016
Publisher: Avon

About the book...

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

I've been waiting for this book for ages! I just love Julia Quinn's writing, she keeps me so immersed in her books I usually finish them in a day or two. Her Regency Romance is even for those of you who don't normally read that genre, she's just that good of a writer!

Review: Troll by Ashley C. Harris

Author: Ashley C. Harris
Source: Purchased in the Amazon Kindle store
Publisher: Createspace
Format: kindle ebook
Pages: 299
Genre: YA fantasy
Rating: 3.7 Stars
Release: October 6th 2015

At the age of sixteen, Abby is undergoing major household changes. Her mom is getting ready to remarry and her new step-brother is driving her insane. She is just trying to keep herself busy with school and her part-time job when a most deliciously handsome stranger moves to her little seaside town and won't leave her alone.
New arrival Wilhelm is unlike any other student at Abby’s school. His emerald eyes and tattooed body don’t truly reveal what he really is: a creature emerged from thousands of miles underground, seeking revenge, treasure, and a key that once belonged to an old enemy – a key Abby wears suspended from a chain around her neck. Why she has it is a mystery that Wilhelm will need to solve, and fast, in order to defeat a powerful mortal adversary.
As an attraction between Abby and Wilhelm develops, more creatures like Wilhelm are drawn from beneath the ground to Abby’s town; wreaking havoc as they offer Abby’s classmates the fulfillment of their deepest desires. Will Abby and her new family survive as a game of magical warfare is unleashed? Her ability to reverse Wilhelm’s bargain depends on it.

Be Relentless, Be Brave...
Not only does Troll deliver a powerful punch in the message it delivers, there's also astounding character development! Abby, the protagonist is really put through the ringer in this one. The first chapter of this book is written in a prologue style. We get to meet Abby when she's just eleven years old, and her life is forever changed by an horrific event. The rest of the book is written in present tense when she's sixteen. I just loved the backstory and it very much helped me connect with the characters (especially Abby) that much more!

I really enjoyed the way in which the author wrote her characters. They are very realistic, especially Abby. In the beginning of this story we get to witness Abby on a date. I could see myself reacting pretty much the exact same way that she did at her age, I loved it!

If you would have told me I'd love a book written about Trolls I would have laughed at you, but alas I gave this one a chance and loved it! One thing I must hit on is the originality of this story. Have you ever read a YA romance based on Trolls? (There's more original twists but I can't tell you about them, you'll have to find out for yourself!)

There is romance in this book and no love triangle! I will say that I believe the romance was more of a build up for the second book and am so pumped to see what happens!

One thing I was a bit undecided about was the pacing of the plot. Now don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But the pieces didn't really click until the last couple of chapters. (Actually around 98% through.) I think the climax of the book began a bit too late and made the middle of the book a bit slow.

I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this story. There is a HUGE plot twist that completely shocked me! It was absolutely spectacular!

My visual feels for Troll...

This week's pre-publication "can't wait to read" selection is...

About the book...

Elicromancers are an ancient breed of immortal people, but only two remain in Nissera after a bloody civil war. Bristal joins the ranks of Brack and Tamarice without knowing that one of them has a dark secret . . . Tamarice is plotting a quest to overthrow the realm’s nobility and take charge herself. Together, Bristal and Brack must guard the three kingdoms of Nissera against Tamarice’s black elicromancy. There are cursed princesses to protect, royal alliances to forge and fierce monsters to battle—all with the hope of preserving peace.

Building on homages to Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jane Austen’s Emma and the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Hannah West makes a spectacular and wholly original debut.

Mini Review: Drown by Esther Dalseno

Source: Purchased in the Amazon Kindle store
Publisher: 3 Little Birds Books
Format: kindle ebook
Pages: 230
Genre: YA fantasy (retelling)
Rating: 4 Stars
Release: October 31st 2015

Seven emotionless princesses. Three ghostly sirens. A beautiful, malicious witch haunted by memories. A handsome, self-mutilating prince.

Belonging to a race that is mostly animal with little humanity, a world obsessed with beauty where morality holds no sway, a little mermaid escapes to the ocean’s surface. Discovering music, a magnificent palace of glass and limestone, and a troubled human prince, she is driven by love to consult the elusive sea-witch who secretly dominates the entire species of merfolk. Upon paying an enormous price for her humanity, the little mermaid begins a new life, uncovering secrets of sexuality and the Immortal Soul. As a deadly virus threatens to contaminate the bloodstreams of the whole merfolk race, the little mermaid must choose between the lives of her people, the man she loves, or herself.

A complete reinvention of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, this is a magical-realist fable that captures the essence of sacrifice and the price of humanity.

My Review of Drown...
"Sometimes what we are searching for does not exist. We may sacrifice for it, even bleed for it, but it was never meant to be ours."

Are you looking for something like you've never read before? Something lyrical, stunning and just downright beautiful? Drown is reminiscent of the tales of old, and it's inspiration was the original The Little Mermaid. No, not Disney's version, but the original Hans Christian Anderson version.

Within the pages of this breathtaking tale you will find love, hope, determination, and darkness!

The POV in this story was startlingly impressive. It's written in third person omniscient view. I was pretty shocked that I loved the POV choice! I'm normally a first person type of reader, but wow this left me wanting more!

Overall I'm so glad I decided to read Drown and am now an Esther Dalseno fan! Perfect for fans of retellings, mermaids and lyrical writing!

Review: Into the Dim by Janet B. Taylor

Series: Into the Dim #1
Source: Netgalley
Format: ebook
Pages: 432
Genre: YA fantasy + time-travel
Rating: 4 Stars
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Release: March 1st 2016

Sixteen year-old Hope Walton travels back in time to rescue her mother who is trapped in twelfth century England in the age of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Along the way, she becomes entangled with a secret society of time travelers and a mysterious boy who could be vital to setting her mother free... or the key to Hope's undoing. Addictive, romantic, and rich with historical detail, "Into the Dim" is an "Outlander "for teens.

My Review for Into the Dim...

Want a time-travel book that will knock your socks off? Look no further, Into the Dim is your book! (Take it from me, I’m always in search of a sock-knocker-offer-time-travel book!)

Not only am I a sucker for time-travel books but did you know this book takes place in Scotland and England! Gah, I love love love reading stories with the setting in Scotland! That setting is just so magical, remote and romantic! (Not to mention that Hope references her family's home in Scotland to Hogwarts!)

Ahh the budding romance in this book! Obviously I won't tell you what happens but I will say there is almost a love triangle, but in my opinion there is none as the story progresses! Hooray for no love triangle!

Now let's just say that there are some tough situations that Hope and her friends are put in in this book. I guess as much trouble as you'd expect any modern day person to get into who has just traveled back in time a thousand years. Shit goes down in a major way in Into the Dim!

Speaking of time-travel, the way in which it's planned out in this story is fresh, original and exciting! I will say my favorite scene in the whole book was when Hope travels to 1154 London. The moment was practically oozing off the page! I was literally on the edge of my seat couch rooting for Hope and her friends to make it through the Dim all in one piece! I've read a lot of time-travel books but not once have I stumbled upon such a fantastic, original description!

I thoroughly enjoyed Hope's reaction to medieval London. One thing that stands out was her realization of what “on the rag” meant.

I tried racking my brain to decide who my favorite secondary character is. Guess what? I realized that the characterization is so great I couldn't choose just one! I ended up with three. I loved Phoebe, the sidekick who is quirky, funny, loyal and can kick some ass if need be! Rachel, the strong, brilliant, brave girl who I am still rooting for! Last but not least Eleanor of Aquitane. I did not expect to like her for some reason. She quickly won me over however. She is a queen, but is humble and very likable. I really felt for her situation, but she did make me realize something. That reminder is of the many struggles women have faced and just how far we've come! (Oh and I'm so glad I wasn't born in 1154!)

Would I recommend:

Wholeheartedly yes! This story is chock full of danger, mystery, intrigue and a whole lot of action!
